MH wrote: Excursions through a Fake Book’s “I’s”...
Part of my love affair with the Great American Songbook...and with taking full
advantage of what falls in my lap.
In this case, it was a sweet triplet of years as
a renter in the beautiful Victorian home (a three-story “painted lady”) of my
friends and fellow ethnomusicologists Peter and Jennifer Hadley and their three children--and, to the
point here, Peter’s Yamaha P-80, with the harpsichord, organ, and electric piano,
along with the regular grand piano, settings.
The feel of so much of this music is of
living in a loft somewhere in Paris, being Bud Powell, playing a tune while gazing
out the window on a lazy afternoon...
Thanks, Hadleys...
Yul Agee:
The image of a newborn resulting from perfect sex (to segue from my last words about the last track of the previous CD in my narrative order here) need not be aborted as we continue. The sprawling, often messy yet primally, subliminally compelling Lazy Ampliano: Music for Loners is indeed the perfect candidate, for some perfectly flawed reasons, for just that image.
Of the 16 (available) virtual CD sets I’ve been pairing by my own mostly thematic criteria, this one (set # 8, this side of the silent center preceding set #9) brings a unique logic to the halfway mark. Not its chronologic; the first two sets (early European songs), the second two (modern American songs), and the third (musical settings of original poems) all, like this fourth pair, jumped around in (the) time and place (of their creators). It isn’t the musicologic of my pairing it with Fake Book Stuff), because it too is just more fake Book stuff.
It is, rather, its numerologic--best described, as inscribed, inductively, from its factual bits and pieces:
• it is the one 3-CD set (all the others are singles and doubles);
• it took shape gradually over a 3-year period (far longer than all the others);
• its 33 short tracks launched by one long one, excepting 3+1 of its compositions (one offered in three takes), are all songs from the alphabetically ordered Fake Book’s “I” section (the 3rd2 letter in the 3rd3-1-letter alphabet);
• its 3+1 voices (grand piano, electric piano, Hammond organ, and harpsichord) were all plied by a solo artist, with no overdubbed tracks (unlike all others, either collaborations with others or with himself outside real time).;
moreover, none of this number-jumbo was planned, all was noticed immediately, just now, as I wrote it.
